Alcatraz also known as ‘The Rock’

Alcatraz, the former military fort and notorious maximum-security federal prison that housed the likes of Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly, and the site of the Indian “Red River Movement” and Occupation from 1969-1971, offers visitors to get and up and close glimpse of life on Alcatraz Island. In addition to the historical importance of Alcatraz, visitors can view the gardens, bay views, and birds nesting.

Alcatraz Island is a 25-acre island located 1 ¼ mile from San Francisco. The Island was designated in1933 by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to be a maximum security prison, called Alcatraz. Alcatraz was an infamous prison that housed notorious and dangerous criminals such as Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert Franklin Stroud, better know as the “Birdman of Alcatraz.”

Visiting Alcatraz was kind of eerie for me… the place felt cold and was dark and morbid.  So I have processed this photographs in black and white… and it was dim, dark, and moody visiting the cell blocks and learning how prisoners were put in the hole.  Our guide told us of how the prisoners could smell what was being cooked on the mainland… and no matter how much they wanted to escape the prison the chances of them ever doing so was practically zero… What with the tide and currents of the Bay, it would make it nigh on impossible to swim to land and even if you were a great swimmer the only fate awaiting you was death by drowning.
