Should I Flip It?

There are times in photography when you might want to flip a photograph. Try this experiment… open an image on your device… close your eyes for a few seconds and then open them to look at the image.

What you will find is this if you read from left to right your eyes will automatically drawn to the left of an image.

If you read right to left your eyes will automatically be drawn to the right.

Camera Settings

Camera: Canon EOS 70D
Lens: EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-6.6 IS STIM
F/Number: f/7.1
ISO: 100

Focal Distance: 18mm
Shutter Speed:
6 sec
Software:
Adobe Lightroom CC and Photoshop Express

So it all depends on what you want your subject to be… to me the above image looks better when the candles and cone are on the left of the image and become the subject. So when flipping a photo it depends on what looks best to your eye. Don’t be afraid to flip an image.. but don’t flip if there is any writing in the image…

  4. An article about Zoom said the prime spot to be in is the upper left. For art this doesn’t apply. I like the second image with the upper left empty.
